Saxman
Native Village Tour
(2 1/2 hours) Upon arrival in the park, your host will share native legends that introduce
the people of Saxman. You will visit a cedar tribal house where a native dance group will
perform tribal dancing. Then on to see the world's largest collection of authentic
totem poles; learn the history and come face-to-face with the native artists at work
practicing their art. Before your return to the ship, take a ride on the Cape Fox
Funicular to a beautiful sight overlooking downtown Ketchikan. Tongass Nature Hike
(3 hours) Join your guide for a hike through the natural, unspoiled beauty of the Tongass
National Forest, as you follow the specially planned trail through this unique and
timeless Eco-System to the shoreline where you will find a spectacular view of Clarence
Strait and Guard Island Lighthouse. A snack will be provided.
NOTE: This tour requires rigorous walking over rugged, damp and uneven terrain.
Sturdy walking shoes and warm waterproof clothing are recommended.
Totem Bight Tour
(2 1/2 hours) Driving through the Tongass National Forest, you will arrive at Totem Bight
State Park, a former Indian campsite. Your guide will lead you to an authentic ceremonial
clan house, where many totems are standing. Along with the native heritage, you will have
the opportunity to see the world's largest pulp mill and pass by several cannery
facilities, which make Ketchikan's claim to the "Salmon Capital of the World".
Sea Kayak Adventure
(2 1/2 hours) Join your guide for an adventure on Ketchikan's unique waterfront.
After safety and paddling instruction, you will explore the shoreline along Pennock Island
as your guide tells you the lore of Whiskey Cove, a secret hideout for rum runners during
prohibition. Before your return, you will paddle past the fishing boats and up Creek
Street, the fabled historic red-light district.
Mountain Lake Canoe Adventure
(3 1/2 hours) Leaving Ketchikan by motor coach, you will ride along the scenic shoreline
and lush rain forest. With your guide, you will board a 37' Indian-style canoe and paddle
across the secluded mountain lake of the Tongass National Forest. Once across, you can
enjoy a warm snack of local treats. Then a short nature walk through the rain forest,
before canoeing back across and returning to the ship.
NOTE: Warm clothing is recommended; ponchos are provided.
Orca Beach Nature Hike
(3 hours) Join your guide for a hike through natural, unspoiled beauty in the
coastal forest. This trail takes you through muskeg, meadows and an old growth forest, en
route to a secluded beach. Enjoy a snack and take time to explore the natural beauty
around you. A motorized zodiac will provide a short cruise along the coast before your
return back to the ship.
NOTE: The trail is 1.5 miles long, mostly downhill and well maintained.
Ketchikan Sport Fishing Tour
(6 hours) Enjoy the scenery, fresh air and a chance to land a salmon or halibut. After a
short drive along the Tongass narrows, you will join the skipper for a trip aboard a fully
equipped charter fishing boat.
NOTE: Alaska law requires a 1-day fishing license and a King Salmon Stamp ($20
total) which may be purchased on board.
Historical and Nature Cruise
(1 3/4 hours) Relax aboard the comfort of an excursion yacht for a sightseeing cruise
along the colorful waterfront of Ketchikan. Learn about the lifestyles of the
pioneers and hear stories about the city's past as you view Creek Street, the former
red-light district. Cruise by seafood processing plants, boat harbors, and floating dry
docks that service the local fishing fleet. Enjoy a snack as you sail past Saxman Totem
Park with its grand totems. View an active eagle's nest or look for bald eagle on your
return to the harbor.
Historic Cannery Tour
(3 hours) During the first half of this century, over 30 salmon canneries and hundreds of
fishing boats once operated in Ketchikan. Since then, commercial fishing has remained an
important part of the local economy, culture and folklore. You will travel back to the
days when without the aid of modern technology, men and women accomplished amazing feats
of skill and ingenuity. Contemporary and historic fishing techniques will be explained
along with an exhibit housing some treasures recently unearthed at the cannery site.
Learn the process by which salmon went from the fisherman's net to the can and on
to markets all over the world. |
Rustic
Alaska Jet Boat Adventure
(3 hours) After a visit at the Salmon Falls Resort where you will have the opportunity to
enjoy the facilities of this five star resort, you will embark on a high speed jet boat,
where you will have a first-hand look at rural coastal living along the historic
waterways of Clover Pass and Naha Bay. View modern seaside homes, cabins and commercial
operations -their only access being by boat. Loring, situated on Neha Bay was
established in 1893 and at one time was the largest fishing port in southeast Alaska.
Today, it is a small quaint waterfront village. A light snack will be provided. Along with
this unique experience, a complete Ketchikan city tour is included. Misty Fjords Seaplane Adventure via
Vistaliner
(2 hours) Travel aboard an exclusive Vistaliner Twin-Otter Seaplane to see and
experience the dramatic sights of Misty Fjords, a total area of more than 2 million acres
of sheer granite cliffs, plunging 1000' waterfalls and crystalline lakes. You will see
incredible sights such as the Tongass Narrows, Myriad and Revillagigedo Islands, forest
ridges and snowcapped peaks. Midway through the flight, your seaplane will land in
Misty Fjords on a lake or saltwater fjord, giving you the opportunity to step out on the
floats and savor the incredible scenery and remote wilderness. You will be in awe as you
see the sights that has beckoned adventurers for centuries!
Revilla Wildlife Adventure
(2 hours) En route to Neets Bay, the float plane will take you by many scenic points of
interest such as Traitors Cove, Salmon Falls and Loring, the historic settlement where
sailing ships used to call to remove the salmon packs from the long gone cannery.
Rounding Bushy Point, you will enter Neets Bay where you will see several seal rookeries
and fishing boats pursuing the millions of salmon that return to the bay annually; a major
salmon hatchery operates here. On your way to the wildlife observation, your guide will
explain the history of the area. Bears, eagles and seals are regularly spotted fishing for
salmon in the stream. On your return trip, you will fly over the Ketchikan Alps and see
spectacular waterfalls and mountain lakes.

Cannery and City Combo

Perseverance Trail
(3 1/2 hours) Your hike begins in beautiful Tongass National Forest, a rain forest that
soaks up over 160" of rain annually. The trail climbs from the old growth through
muskeg meadows with countless berry plants, ferns, Sitka spruce, western hemlock and
cedar. A large portion of the trail is boardwalk which provides easy footing. You will
have time to relax with a light snack at the top of the trail by Perseverance Lake.
Ketchikan City and Island Tour
(1 1/2 hours) Your guide will provide lively narration and share the history of Ketchikan
with you as you view infamous Creek Street, once a red-light district, today a respectable
boardwalk of galleries, shops and restaurants. See the waterfront canneries, bustling boat
harbors, pulp mill and Totem Heritage Center, a museum of native carved totem poles
preserved for your enjoyment. |
