Stella Cottrell is a
native Houstonian, received all her schooling in Houston except a year
spent in Mexico City, taking a business course in Spanish, in
preparation for being a bilingual secretary. Returning to Houston,
she enrolled in night classes at the University of Houston, with a
major in French and minor in English.
In 1951, she joined
Trans-Texas Airways (that evolved into Texas International and then
Continental Airlines), in the sales office. In 1953, she joined the
third travel agency in Houston and two years later joined the
prestigious Harvey Travel Bureau in the River Oaks Shopping Center.
Here she became office manager and later was made Vice President and
Manager of a branch office in the Houston Club Building. She remained
with this agency until 1966, when she left and opened her own agency,
Stella Cottrell Travel, located in the Lower Level of the Tenneco
Building (now the El Paso Tower). There she remained until 1986, when
the agency was moved to the Highland Village Shopping Center. Now,
since June 2009, her agency relocated to the offices of West
University Travel.
Although there have been
many, many changes in the travel industry, Stella is committed to give
her passengers the same service to which they are accustomed. She
will not settle for less.
In 1961 she married Simon
Cottrell, a vice-Consul for France, and a native of Martinique, in the
French West Indies. He died in 1984 and it was the strength he gave
her that allowed her to open Stella Cottrell Travel.
Her specialties are pretty
much the world, but her favorites are France, Italy, England, Spain,
Greek Isles, Mexico and Latin America, and especially Martinique,
where she still visits her husband’s family.
Cruises (her middle name is
Cruz), tours, and personal itinerary planning are all special to her.
