Fiji & Australia
A GREAT 2 WEEK VACATION - OFF SEASON

Yes, it is winter season (June, July, August) in Australia. And I highly recommend it!  Here is a wonderful trip that combines many delightful elements, including a non-frantic pace.

5 nights in Sydney, 4 nights in Cairns and 3 nights in Fiji. This little adventure includes everything from the Great Barrier Reef, the rainforest and some excellent wines. There was also time to examine opals, dive the reef, enjoy excellent dining and just relax on beautiful beaches.

I chose to stop in Fiji on the first leg of the trip. Just as easily, this could have been the last stop. The Fijian people are among the strongest of my memories. Fijians are so friendly and open to conversation that it is almost impossible not to retain vivid images.

Etta, the humorous manager of the elegant seafood restaurant at the Warwick Resort. Don’t try to out drink her, it can’t be done, but trying will likely get you an invitation to her village.

Phoebe, daughter of one of the last tribal kings. Full of stories of the not-so-long-ago days. How long has it been since cannibalism stopped? Supposedly, a long time ago, but her teeth are sure filed to fine points and she loves to talk about the "legends" of human feasts.

Albert, one of the musicians. So quick to smile and show off his family. He wants so desperately to see the world outside his island.

There is so much to the story of Fiji. Certainly political troubles are not far from the surface. The resorts are world class and you can stay close or go into the mountains and villages for contact with another civilization.

Touch With Koalas

The next stop was Cairns, gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the great rainforests, second only to those of the Amazon basin. Cairns is a lovely town, with a lovely esplanade. Shopping is varied and inexpensive, from gems to fashion, not to mention souvenirs of all descriptions.

A one day journey to an outer island and then beyond is highly recommended. Snorkeling, scuba diving or just glass bottom boat sightseeing are a great way to spend a day.

Exploring the rainforest is a wonderful experience. Expect lots of crocodile sightings mixed with other wildlife sightings. Yes, there are kangaroos and Koalas to see and touch. A day trip is a mixture of tourism; cable car, train ride, native village complete with souvenirs, to the real jungle experience.

Australian Wines are Superb

Sydney is just as wonderful a city as you have heard. Food, entertainment (Cirque du Soleil, opera, stage or just plain jazz or cocktail shows). Sightseeing opportunities are plentiful and inviting. Definitely sail on one or more of the harbor boats that connect the various parts of Sydney. Shopping is superb and the exchange rate practically compels purchases. TIP: try Australian wines, particularly the Shiraz and try to visit a winery.

Summary: Australia is a great destination. If you have more than two weeks, you will be greatly rewarded. I have not begun to describe other areas of this country/continent. If you only have two weeks, the above itinerary is an excellent mixture of travel entertainment and leisure time.
