I have recently returned from a visit to an old friend - the Provencal countryside of Southern France. Provence is the rather large area extending from the Rhone river around the city of Avignon to the west where it meets the French Riviera.
The area is so diversified that one needs to concentrate on what is held in common - beautiful scenery, great food and a delightful climate (usually). And, never forget the history of Provence, it explains so much.

Although Avignon is a busy, traffic-heavy city, it remains a remarkable destination. The Palace of the Popes, home to the Papacy for almost one hundred years, is great to wander through. As you stroll along the maze of hallways and rooms, you will find it hard not to lose yourself in a flood of historical dreams. Warning - the furnishings are not as dramatic as the exterior; most of the furnishings having been destroyed during the French Revolution.
It is the countryside, however, that makes Provence worth a stay of many days, or weeks, or ... For hundreds of years, this area was the center of Roman civilization. It was probably more roman than Italy. Antiquities are scattered abundantly throughout the area. The amphitheater and triumphal arch in Orange. The Pont du Gard, the incredible engineering feat that provided water to the city of Nimes, and is still more water tight than my roof. The mysterious ruins of St. Roman is another side trip not to be missed. The list is almost endless.
Travel from the valleys of the Rhone to the mountaintops close to Gordes. Be sure to include in your itinerary the great vistas from Les Baux. This sketch does not even include the cities of Nimes, Arles, Aix en Provence and so many more. And then there is Marseilles and Toulon and the Camargue with its wild horses and the crusader town of Aigues Mortes.
Accommodations can be so special. I stayed at a hilltop chateau between Avignon and Orange. The scenery, air and of course, the food, were incredible. Values for both food and lodging were remarkable values.
Please call me for greater details. I enjoy talking about this wonderful area that holds so many glorious memories for so many people.
