MACHU PICCHU - Lost City of the Incas
Yes, Machu Picchu is everything you supposed; mysterious, spectacular and very capable of stirring your imagination. As is true in any great trip, however, it is the journey that is as memorable as the destination.
I have recently returned from a trip to Peru. The experience included a flight to Cuzco (11,500 foot altitude) and then a full day bus ride through the Urubamba Valley and then train, bus and hike to the fabulous ruins of Machu Picchu.
Spectacular scenery highlighted every step of the way. Machu Picchu is located high among the mountain peaks with clouds surrounding the ruins (and yourself). The clouds and sun alternate every few minutes adding mystery and atmosphere to the scene. Even the flight from Lima to Cuzco can be counted among the glorious sights. You fly only a few thousand feet above the Andes and are rewarded with views that are as spectacular as any train journey in Switzerland.
The trip has so many aspects that it is hard to describe all of the sensory experiences; such as:
The Urubamba Valley, home of many Inca sites and a place to explore and meet many of the local citizens. Indian markets, more colorful and exciting than any I have seen elsewhere. Certainly, the prices are great - $15.00 for an alpaca sweater.
Cuzco, a thriving and interesting city to explore. Cuzco rates high on any scale - Architecture, shopping, street scenes, very sophisticated food and wonderful accommodations.
Even Lima, with all the drawbacks of a city of 8 million people is a very walk-able city (Except for the exhaust fumes) with many attractions.
I urge anyone with a wanderlust to consider this journey. There is still much to describe but call to discuss the details. I would recommend traveling as part of an organized group but individuals can certainly organize their own itinerary.
Please call or for more specifics and recommendations.
