How about a vacation in luxury through the very heart of Europe - without the daily hassles of traffic, buses and hotels. Enjoy breathtaking scenery, participate in walking tours in charming medieval towns and visit quaint villages. This is what European river cruising is all about.
Most of the fairytale castles, grand cathedrals and magnificent mansions stand watch on the mighty rivers of Europe, and tourists can discover the pure bliss of visiting the past while ensconced in modern comfort.
Ray and I recently tried this mostly new mode of travel, river cruising, and we agreed with all our fellow river travelers, that this was the way to enjoy Europe. Our river cruise was the classic Vienna to Amsterdam cruise that took us up the Danube River, across the Main Canal to the Main and Rhine Rivers. Most of the passengers on board had already done the motor coach tours and the self-driving trips, and they all agreed, that this was indeed the best value, and most enjoyable way to travel through Europe. No packing, unpacking, checking in and out of hotels, no need for maps and getting lost on back roads.
River cruising includes all the shore excursions, so come along for a walk through the medieval towns that are numerous along the river. As you know, most of Germany was destroyed in World War II, but most of the towns along the rivers were painstakingly rebuilt to their original charm. Each walking tour is lead by an expert local guide who told us of the history and folklore stories of the town and era.
Even modern Frankfurt has an old town section and a wonderful examples of historic architecture.
Life on the river boat is interesting as well. On the route through the Main Canal, we went through 62 locks. And the river boats have a restriction on size or they just don’t make it under the bridges.
Bamburg, Nuremburg, Wurzburg, Regensburg, Reidenburg, you never get tired of visiting these great towns. So charming, yet different from each other.
The Main Canal, an engineering wonder, connecting the Main River with the Danube, 16 locks, and reaching as high as 80 feet.
The dramatic Rhine Gorge passes countless castles and churches on the river. See the world famous Lorelei Rock, where legends says that a siren lured sailors to their doom on the rocks below. Be prepared with extra rolls of film. And did I mention shopping? Even in September, the Christmas markets are getting ready for the big thrust in December. I poked along the interesting sections of the old towns and, just like a cat, the narrower the street, the more curious I got.
